Northern Light Mercy Hospital is pleased to announce that Richard King, MD, a double board-certified surgeon, has joined
Northern Light Mercy Surgery. In a collaborative arrangement, Dr. King will also be seeing InterMed patients as an InterMed physician in its Portland location, providing consultative care and performing surgical procedures.
Dr. Richard King is board-certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care with additional training in trauma, burns, and wound care. Before joining Mercy, Dr. King was the Trauma Medical Director at Central Maine Medical Center through a joint initiative with his employer, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School in Boston where he held an appointment.
Dr. King was educated at Cornell University and New York Medical College, where he received his medical degree in 1995. Following a surgical internship at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington and four years as a U.S. Army physician with NATO headquarters in the Netherlands supporting deployments in the Balkans, he completed his surgical training and critical care fellowship at the Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 2006. Dr. King then spent most of his career as a practicing trauma and burn surgeon in Western New York before moving to Maine with his family in 2018.
Dr. King holds a commission as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and is assigned to a U.S. Marine Surgical Company of the 4th Medical Battalion in Washington, DC where he travels once a month to drill. He lives in Cumberland with his wife, Dr. Jennifer King, who is a practicing marriage and family therapist in Falmouth. When not taking care of patients, the Kings like to sail on Casco Bay with friends and hike in the Rangeley Lakes area. They have four grown children.
